10:00 AM, Monday 8 May 2017 - 3:30 PM, Tuesday 9 May 2017

Place: Glamorgan Building, Cardiff University, Cardiff.

This is a two-day workshop for a small group of participants who are interested in using multiple methods in their research designs. It is primarily hands-on work, to introduce you to doing research differently. It will also explore ‘The Politics of Method’, such as tensions between ethnography and multimodality, different technologies, and the aesthetics of ‘data’.

Beyond the Interview: walking, hearing and picturing social worlds

Convenors: Rachel Hurdley, Brett Lashua, Kate Moles and Bambo Soyinka

Rachel Hurdley explains what the two days will cover:

“On Day 1, the convenors will give brief presentations on methodological approaches, followed by group discussion over tea and coffee. The first session will work on how we use our bodies and senses as research technologies, through film, sound, drawing, making models, and collages of found objects.  After a presentation on ‘Sound, Writing and Vision’, we will break for a much-needed lunch, followed by a session of ‘Walking Meditation’. Participants will then form multimedia research groups and spend the afternoon doing fieldwork in nearby Gorsedd Gardens. Each group of four will practise using film, photography, audio-recording, field notes and art. We will meet back at the venue for refreshments, and discuss our experiences in the field.

“On Day 2, we will begin with a short presentation about how we might use ‘data’ in analysis and representation. The convenors will work with you to analyse the research materials.  After lunch, each group will produce and present their interpretations – for example: multimedia presentation, blog, scrap book, poster, an exhibition or installation.  We will end by thinking about the politics of representation, and how conventional academic outputs produce particular forms of knowledge.”

This workshop is aimed at ESRC funded research students Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff and Swansea who will have priority for places but others are welcome to attend, space permitting.

Cost

  • Postgraduate social science research students registered at a UK HEI: free of charge
  • Non social-science postgraduate research students: £60.00
  • Staff at HEIs, ESRC funded researchers, UK registered charities: £120.00
  • Others: £300

Participants are expected to attend both full days.  The workshop involves group work which would be compromised by single-day attendance.  Lunch and refreshments are provided.

The Wales DTP is able to fund a limited number of bursaries (up to £150 per bursary per day) to support the attendance of postgraduate social science research students from outside of the Wales DTP institutions.  Students must be currently registered at a UK HEI.  The bursary is designed to help meet travel costs (standard/economy travel) and hotel accommodation.  Bursaries will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.  Non-Wales DTP students should contact enquiries@walesdtp.ac.uk regarding the availability of a bursary and for information on how to claim back travel expenses, after completing the booking form below.

Cancellations received later than 14 days prior to the workshop will incur a charge.

When applying for this workshop, please submit a 100-150 word summary in the ‘comments’ section when you book, about why you are interested in doing the workshop, and your research interests.
