SUMMARY:Multimodality Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is a two-day workshop for a small group of participants wh
o are interested in using multiple methods in their research designs. It i
s primarily hands-on work\, to introduce you to doing research differently
. It will also explore ‘The Politics of Method’\, such as tensions bet
ween ethnography and multimodality\, different technologies\, and the aest
hetics of ‘data’.\nBeyond the Interview: walking\, hearing and picturi
ng social worlds\nConvenors: Rachel Hurdley\, Brett Lashua\, Kate Moles an
d Bambo Soyinka\n\nRachel Hurdley explains what the two days will cover:\n
"On Day 1\, the convenors will give brief presentations on methodological
approaches\, followed by group discussion over tea and coffee. The first s
ession will work on how we use our bodies and senses as research technolog
 ies\, through film\, sound\, drawing\, making models\, and collages of fou
nd objects.  After a presentation on ‘Sound\, Writing and Vision’\, w
e will break for a much-needed lunch\, followed by a session of ‘Walking
Meditation’. Participants will then form multimedia research groups and
spend the afternoon doing fieldwork in nearby Gorsedd Gardens. Each group
of four will practise using film\, photography\, audio-recording\, field
notes and art. We will meet back at the venue for refreshments\, and discu
ss our experiences in the field.\n\n"On Day 2\, we will begin with a short
presentation about how we might use ‘data’ in analysis and represent
ation. The convenors will work with you to analyse the research materials.
After lunch\, each group will produce and present their interpretations
  - for example: multimedia presentation\, blog\, scrap book\, poster\, an
exhibition or installation.  We will end by thinking about the politics o
f representation\, and how conventional academic outputs produce particula
r forms of knowledge."\nThis workshop is aimed at ESRC funded research stu
dents Aberystwyth\, Bangor\, Cardiff and Swansea who will have priority fo
r places but others are welcome to attend\, space permitting.\nCost\n\n P
ostgraduate social science research students registered at a UK HEI: free
of charge\n Non social-science postgraduate research students: £60.00\n
Staff at HEIs\, ESRC funded researchers\, UK registered charities: £120.
00\n Others: £300\n\nParticipants are expected to attend both full days.
The workshop involves group work which would be compromised by single-d
ay attendance.  Lunch and refreshments are provided.\n\nThe Wales DTP is
able to fund a limited number of bursaries (up to £150 per bursary per da
 y) to support the attendance of postgraduate social science research stude
nts from outside of the Wales DTP institutions.  Students must be current
ly registered at a UK HEI.  The bursary is designed to help meet travel c
osts (standard/economy travel) and hotel accommodation.  Bursaries will b
 e allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.  Non-Wales DTP students s
hould contact enquiries@walesdtp.ac.uk regarding the availability of a bu
rsary and for information on how to claim back travel expenses\, after com
pleting the booking form below.\n\nCancellations received later than 14 da
ys prior to the workshop will incur a charge.\n\nWhen applying for this w
orkshop\, please submit a 100-150 word summary in the 'comments' section w
hen you book\, about why you are interested in doing the workshop\, and yo
 ur research interests.
