ESRC StudentshipIn the majority of academic literature and governmental reports concerning maternal imprisonment the experiences of black mothers have been overlooked, de-racialised, or grouped together with other racial minority groups. Therefore this research focuses specifically on black mothers with the purpose of exploring how the prison environment shapes black mothering narratives and identities.
This research is underpinned by a black feminist narrative approach and semi-structured narrative interviews are used as the main tool for data collection.
