SUMMARY:The Use of Foreign Language Skills in Social Science Research
DESCRIPTION:The keynote speaker at this year's Language-Based Area Studies 
 Annual Training Workshop is Dr Claire Spencer\, Head of Middle East &amp\
 ; North Africa Programmes\, Chatham House (Royal Institute for Internation
 al Affairs)\, London.\n\nThe workshop will include presentations by Profe
 ssor David James\, the Director of the ESRC Wales DTC\, and Swansea and 
 Cardiff University staff and research students.\n\nThere will also be an 
 open surgery for research students to meet Professor Spencer and Swansea 
 and Cardiff University staff to discuss their research.\n\nTopics to be co
 vered include:\n\n	The use of foreign language skills in social science re
 search\, especially in the fields of politics and international relations\
 ;\n	Opportunities and challenges arising from the use of bilingual or mult
 i-lingual research methods\;\n	Interrogating language-specific literatures
  in research in the social sciences\, especially in the fields of politics

 n\n	Wales DTC postgraduate social science research students\, i.e. student
 s registered at Aberystwyth\, Bangor\, Cardiff or Swansea Universities –
  free of charge\n	ESRC and non-funded postgraduate social science research
  students registered at a UK HEI: conference registration fee - £25.00.\n
 \nFees can only be paid by cheque made payable to 'Swansea University'. St
 udents requiring overnight accommodation on 5th July at Swansea University
  at a rate of £35.00 should notify Dr Gerard Clarke at the time of bookin
 g.\n\nThe Wales DTC is able to fund a limited number of bursaries to suppo
 rt the attendance of postgraduate social science research students from ou
 tside the Wales DTC institutions. Students must be currently registered at
  a UK HEI. The bursary is designed to help meet travel (standard/economy f
 ares) and accommodation costs up to a maximum sum of £125. Bursaries will
  be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Non-Wales DTC students s
 hould contact Gerard Clarke in the first instance regarding the availabili
 ty of a bursary and for information on how to claim back travel expenses.
