10:30 AM - 3:00 PM, Tuesday 10 December 2013

Place: Hadyn Ellis Building, Cardiff University, Caerdydd/Cardiff.

Presenter

  • Professor Mick Bloor, Cardiff School of Social Sciences

Course Content and Aims

The workshop is designed to cater for social science postgraduates undertaking or planning research on sensitive topics, or in hazardous environments. It will deal with ways of keeping physically safe and ways of coping with emotional challenge or upset. It will also deal with institutional protections offered by universities – risk assessments, ethics committee oversight, insurance and counselling.

It will be led by Prof Michael Bloor (Cardiff School of Social Sciences) who chaired an ESRC-funded Inquiry into risks to researchers and has himself experienced a range of related risks at first-hand.

The workshop will involve accounts of hazards previously encountered by social researchers, an overview of the literature on researcher safety (including codes of good practice), and some examples of how safety issues are handled in other non-university institutions (such as aid agencies). There will also be short filmed clips of interviews.  Those attending will be asked to participate in exercises to develop safety practices for specific research projects. There will be an opportunity for participants to discuss safety issues relating to their own projects.
