SUMMARY:ESRC Summer School in Corpus Approaches to Social Science
DESCRIPTION:This free-to-attend summer school takes place at Lancaster Univ
ersity\, under the aegis of ESRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Sc
ience (CASS)\, an ESRC research centre bringing a new method in the study
of language – the corpus approach – to a range of social sciences. CAS
S is investigating the use and manipulation of language in society in a ho
st of areas of pressing concern\, including climate change\, hate crime an
d education. A crucial part of the CASS remit is to provide researchers ac
ross the social sciences with the skills needed to apply the tools and tec
hniques of corpus linguistics to the research questions that matter in the
ir own discipline.\n\nThis event is aimed at junior social scientists –
especially PhD students and postdoctoral researchers – in any of the soc
ial science disciplines. The programme consists of a series of intensive t
wo-hour sessions\, some involving practical work\, others more discussion-
 oriented.\n\nTopics include:\n\n	Introduction to corpus linguistics\;\n	Co
rpus tools and techniques\;\n	Collecting corpus data\;\n	Foundational tech
niques for social science data - keywords and collocation\;\n	Understandin
g statistics for corpus analysis\;\n	Discourse analysis for the social sci
ences\;\n	Semantic annotation and key domains\;\n	Corpus-based approaches
to metaphor in discourse\;\n	Pragmatics\, politeness and impoliteness in t
he corpus.\n\nThe CASS Summer School is free to attend\, but registration
in advance is compulsory\, as places are limited. The deadline for registr
ations is Sunday 8th June 2014. The application form is available on the e
vent website. Further information\, including the programme\, is available
  on the event website too.
