Course Content and Aims
Students will ideally be in Years 3 and 4 of their PhD programme and have completed their data collection, i.e. you will be ready to plan, and begin your academic publishing ‘career’. The focus is on understanding the processes of reviewing and refereeing publications and submissions of others and on preparing your own work for submission to journals and book publishers.
Students will learn about the refereeing processes that lie ‘behind’ the peer reviewed journal and the published book, by engaging in the actual tasks of refereeing papers and book proposals. Students will also learn how to approach journals to solicit offers of book reviews and write book reviews, how to research journals and write properly tailored submissions; and how to research book publishers and prepare a book proposal that will be treated seriously
To participate in these sessions, you need to have conducted a piece of independent research, e.g. an ‘M’ thesis. Preparatory work is required for these sessions, and you will get individual feedback by email afterwards.. At the end of the multi-part course you will have reviewed a book, refereed an article and a book proposal, and have a template for an article and a monograph proposal about your own work.
